What happened to the blueberries?

Farm update: It’s official… I think we’ve climate-ed out of blueberries in our area, this is unlucky year number three of no sellable crop. The bushes are still (mostly) alive, but even despite all the wonderful precipitation we’ve gotten this year, and hopefully normal irrigation, we are still in a drought (30% drier than normal). This isn’t good news for blueberries. We may have a crop in the future, but right now we need to listen to Mother Nature and adapt to this new normal.

So what does this mean for the future of the farm? We are diversifying our crops and planting more drought resistant/tolerant varietals. We will still remain primarily a fruit farm, but we will grow much more than just berries. I’m keeping the name of the farm as is for now, primarily because my mother worked so hard to hand draw our logo so many years ago, I couldn’t possibly think of replacing it with something new.

The good news is so many of the test plantings I’ve put in over the last few years are doing so well! Marionberries, boysenberries, thornless blackberries, figs, and table grapes are thriving, and I cannot wait for them to produce enough fruit to be able to share with you! The fruit set for our pears and apples are looking fantastic, so barring disaster I should be back at markets in August, September, and around the holidays with some goodies for you.

Thanks to everyone for your support! In October we enter our 40th anniversary and we couldn’t have done it without you!
